Shaif's bio

“Shaif Abdul Basier” was born and raised in small-town Paramaribo, which is the capital city of the Surinam Republic. Growing up among a wide variety of cultures his musical interest came to be very diverse. Referring to Surinam’s location at the heart of the strong flow of cultural currents which are so typical of the Caribbean and South-American area, Shaif says :” Surinam is a melting pot where inspiration and cultural influences come naturally, they are free natural resources”.

His interest in Music was recognized at an early age by his parents who sent him to their neighbor and local musician “Eddy Snijders”, father of the well-known Dutch flutist “Ronald Snijders”. As the music lessons focused on theory and technique, little Shaif discovered he found it much more fun to kick his own notes and create new songs rather than play by the book over and over again. His musical feel for melody was molded even more as his parents made sure Shaif practiced on time and took his music classes seriously.

At seventeen the family migrated to The Netherlands. The anonymity of the big city brought new opportunities. While still very shy to show people his desire and ability to sing, he at first kept to himself writing lyrics. Finally after an audition for a local band he got somewhat introduced to musicians and other artists trying to make it.

Together with Rotterdam based DJ Kay he co-founded the group Synergy. In 1996 Synergy won a Dutch award at Amsterdam Paradiso in the R&B category with two slick tracks named : “If u wanna” and “Let’s get 2gether”. Times where tough for the family and pressure to attain more attention to his more formal studies was building. Less time remained for experimenting with music. In 1998 however, Shaif signed up as a Solo artist for the Suripop festival, a once per two years national Singer-songwriter contest held in Surinam. Unfortunately the production of the track “Sondro Ju” got delayed and the Song was rejected by the Suripop organization.

While not in the race for a price at the Suripop contest, radio stations in Surinam and Netherlands underground unexpectedly gave “Sondro ju” airplay. With newfound credibility as a balladeer, Shaif drawed the attention of people from the inner grounds of the Surinam-Dutch music scene. FAYA records, an underground label fronted by Dj Kay in conspiracy with Delieche Records, boldly decided to execute a full fledged underground launch of Shaif. Very bold indeed when considering the fact that record companies in the Netherlands have never been to keen on launching acts from within the underground. Most acts launched by the allready-vested industry don’t seem to be able to reach an underground audience large enough to make money for themselves and the artist or reach the charts. A situation Faya records has the ambition to change. As for now... Time will tell.

Shaif Abdul Basier groeide op in Paramaribo, de hoofdstad van Suriname. De stad met haar rijkdom aan culturen en exotische invloeden vormde een inspirerende omgeving voor zijn muzikale ontwikkeling. Zoals hij het zelf uitdrukt : “Suriname is een smeltpot van culturen waar inspiratie en culturele beïnvloeding natuurlijke hulpbronnen zijn waar je niet voor hoeft te betalen.”.

Zijn interesse voor muziek werd al van jongs af aan herkend en gestimuleerd door zijn ouders die hem voor muzieklessen stuurden naar de locale musicus en overbuurman “Eddy Snijders”, de vader van de in Nederland populaire dwarsfluitist “Ronald Snijders”. Terwijl de lessen de nodige nadruk legden op theorie en techniek ervoer Shaif al meteen de drang om zelf muziek te maken.

Na het afronden van de middelbare school emigreerde het gezin naar Nederland. De anonimiteit van de grote Nederlandse stad bleek een positieve uitwerking te hebben op Shaif’s verlegenheid zijn talent ten toon te stellen. In 1995 richtte Shaif samen met de Rotterdamse DJ Kay de groep SYNERGY op. Kay alias “Werner Kanhai” had in het verleden reeds in de Rotterdamse R&B formatie K-Shaw gezeten. De SYNERGY won in 1996 een award tijdens de Grote Prijs van Nederland voor de R&B tracks “If u wanna” en “Let’s get 2gether”. Het werd een drukke en moeilijke tijd. In Nederland, met haar relatief kleine markt voor binnenlandse artiesten, lagen de platencontracten immers niet voor het oprapen. De druk om een reguliere opleiding af te maken nam toe naarmate een toekomst in de muziek minder waarschijnlijk leek.

Er was nu minder tijd voor muzikale experimenten en even gebeurde er helemaal niks op het muzikale front. In 1998 echter, meldde Shaif, zich als solo artiest en songwriter aan op het Suripop festival met de ballad “Sondro Ju”. Het Suripop festival is een prestigieus tweejaarlijks muziekcontest in Suriname waarbij liedjesschrijvers en uitvoerende artiesten meedingen naar de Suripop award. Alhoewel Shaif nog altijd enkel de Surinaamse nationaliteit bezat, en dus recht had op deelname, werd zijn inzending niet toegelaten tot het contest. Volgens de organisatie was het liedje net te laat ingezonden.

Hoewel uitgesloten van deelname aan het Suripop contest werd onverwachts zowel in Nederland als in Suriname het liedje wel opgepikt door lokale radiostations. De aandacht voor het werk in de kleine media leidde tot de interesse van enkele kleine Nederlandse platenmaatschappijen. Uiteindelijk werd getekend bij het Rotterdamse FAYA Records in samenwerking met Delieche Records. De maatschappijen staan een aanpak voor waarbij Shaif vooralsnog wordt gelanceerd vanuit de undergroundse Surinaamse muziekscène. Een aanpak die heeft geresulteerd in de release van de Debuutsingle “Jeh Law Mi”.
